Faith in miniature

Bonsai is the art of growing miniature trees in pots or trays, using techniques such as pinching buds, pruning and wiring branches to make them aesthetically pleasing. A bonsai plant needs an appropriate combination of soil, sunshine, air and water for it to flourish.

Most of all, it needs patience. Loving patience.

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.    1 Cor 3:6-7  (NIV)

Yesterday, during my art class, i was painting this bonsai plant from a photo which i had taken a few years ago at a garden festival. Coincidentally, a classmate whom i hadn’t met for a long time returned to class. A long-time bonsai enthusiast, she was very excited and exclaimed that i was the first person she had ever seen painting a bonsai.

Then, she wistfully related to me her heartache when her bonsai plant wilted after being sent for an exhibition. It had taken her twenty years of painstaking care to grow the bonsai, only to see it wither due to neglect.

It is so much like our seed of faith. Someone sowed it, but we need to nourish it ourselves, then God will make our faith grow. Without any nourishment or through our neglect, our faith will slowly but eventually die. Just like the bonsai plant.       By R

  1. A lovely painting of a work of art. I defintely admire anyone who can grow a bonsai. I tried but failed, and rather quickly I’m sorry to say. I have pretty good luck with most house plants, however. My relationship with our Heavenly Father needs strengthening every day! I’m glad I can keep working at it! 😉

    1. Linda, I am very impressed that you tried! This bonsai was actually the winning entry for bonsai plants. I understand from my friend that the owner spends quite a large sum of money engaging professional expertise to grow this plant. I sure am glad i only need to work on growing my faith too!
