Golden Shower Orchids or Dancing Ladies Orchids? Both. These brilliant golden petals, the size of our thumbs, dazzled our eyes in the bright sunshine. While Ben ended up with blurry close up shots of the orchids, painting them close up with my blurry eyes was difficult for me too.
These rows of exquisite blooms at our National Orchid Garden is a real feast for the eyes. I have always likened them to God’s showers of blessings – generous and abundant.
Just as these golden orchids dazzled our eyes, God’s graces can dazzle us too. St Paul was dazzled by a bright light. For three days he remained blind. When his eyes were opened, he saw the Truth and was finally convinced and converted, heart and soul, for the Lord. (Acts 9)
Sometimes we too need this ‘dazzling’ encounter with the Lord, before we are truly converted.
Before June 1990, i was just an ‘outstanding’ Sunday Catholic, always late, standing at the back of the church. God was confined to Sundays. Ben was rather critical of any Christian who tried to discuss their faith with him. He would fire questions at them until they fumbled and were confounded.
Then in June 1990, we had a spiritual encounter when we visited Medjugorje. No, we weren’t dazzled blind like St Paul. But something dazzled from within and around us. When we returned home that very week, Ben immediately signed up for a class to become a Catholic. We joined a church group and started a Cenacle prayer group in our home. Then the many dazzling experiences of the Lord in our lives started…
…and never ceased since. By Renee and Ben
“I will make them and the places around My hill a blessing. And I will cause showers to come down in their season; they will be showers of blessing. Ezekiel 34:26 (NASB)
