Light the light

When i was young and there was no electricity yet in our village, it was always fascinating to watch my dad light up the kerosene lamp when night fell. It would take several minutes to pump the lamp for the mantle to burn and finally ‘plop’ bright and shining. It was the only light in the whole house. The moment he turned off the lamp around 9-10 pm, it meant that it was time to retire to bed. There wasn’t much one could do in the dark.

Since then, light has come a long way. We switch the lights on and off at will, and we prolong the night and turn it into day. We have 24-hour shopping malls where you can eat and shop until the wee hours of the morning. Even when all the lights are off, we still have our LED light from our laptops and mobile phones to read in the dark. We have since stopped following nature as well as our body clock.

As Advent begins, i am once again reminded that Christ is still the one and only true Light. Only He alone can light my path and show me the right way. All others are false lights that lead me astray.

For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.   2 Cor 4:6  (NASB)
